What is the Aftercare of Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery offers a longer-lasting solution for correcting vision and freedom from glasses or contact lenses. But the journey doesn’t end after the procedure. Proper aftercare is essential to ensure a smooth recovery, protect your vision, and maximise results. Whether you’re scheduled for a LASIK, PRK, or SMILE, here’s what you need to know about post-surgery care:
Immediate Aftercare: The First 24–48 Hours
The first two days are crucial for healing. Here’s what to expect and how to care for your eyes:
- Rest your eyes: Keep them closed as much as possible on the day of surgery. Avoid screen time and bright lights.
- Use prescribed eye drops: These help prevent infection, reduce inflammation, and keep your eyes moist. Follow your surgeon’s schedule strictly.
- Avoid rubbing or touching your eyes: Your eyes will be sensitive. Rubbing them may dislodge the healing tissue, especially in flap-based procedures like LASIK.
- Wear eye shields at night: These protect your eyes while sleeping and prevent accidental rubbing.
The First Week
As your vision begins to stabilise, it’s vital to support your recovery by:
- Avoiding dusty or smoky environments: These can irritate healing eyes and increase infection risk.
- Steering clear of water exposure: No swimming, spa, or direct shower spray into the eyes for at least one week.
- Avoid eye makeup for at least 1–2 weeks: This reduces the risk of infection or irritation.
- Wearing sunglasses outdoors: Protect your eyes from UV rays and bright light, which can cause discomfort during healing.
- Limiting strenuous activity: Refrain from heavy lifting, intense exercise, or contact sports to prevent pressure on the eyes.
One Month and Beyond
Healing continues well past the initial days, so ongoing care matters.
- Attend all follow-up appointments: Your surgeon will monitor your recovery and adjust treatment if needed.
- Be patient with visual fluctuations: It’s normal for vision to fluctuate slightly before stabilising over several weeks.
- Use prescribed eye drops: Some dryness may persist. Lubricating drops can keep your eyes comfortable.
