ICL Surgery
(Intraocular Contact Lens Surgery)
An ICL procedure is a vision correction procedure where a premium intraocular contact lens is expertly place inside of the eye to eliminate the need for glasses.
A lot of patients are told that they are not suitable for laser eye surgery and ICL’s are an excellent option in these patients.
An extremely comprehensive eye examination will be performed to assess the suitability of everyone’s eyes for ICL surgery.
Who is suitable for ICL Surgery?
- Intraocular contact lenses or ICL’s are used in cases where a patient is not suitable for LASIK, SMILE or Presbyond.
- If a patient has a very high level of shortsightedness, long sightedness or a stigmatism that cannot be corrected with the laser on an ICL is an excellent alternative.
- Patients who have very thin corneas and who are unsuitable for LASIK or SMILE are best suited to undergo ICL surgery.
- Even patients with keratoconus and corneal transplants can have ICL's implanted to significantly improve their vision and reduce their dependence on glasses and contact lenses.
- Patients with high prescriptions not suitable for Presbyond.
- Any patient wishing to be less reliant on glasses who do not want to undergo laser eye surgery.
WHERE IS AN ICL IMPLANTED?
- An ICL is implanted inside of the eye behind the iris, the coloured part of the eye, and in front of your natural lens.
- The natural lens inside the eye remains intact and is not removed.
- An ICL is invisible to the naked eye and can only be seen with a microscope by your ophthalmologist.
HOW SOES AN ICL WORK AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
- The ICL corrects myopia or near-sightedness, hypertropia or farsightedness and astigmatism.
- The benefits of an ICL procedure are the fact that it is reversible and there is no thinning out of the cornea like in laser eye surgery.
- The correction achieved with ICL’s does not wear off and is extremely stable until the need for cataract surgery later in life.
ICL PROCEDURE
The ICL surgery is performed as a day procedure.
The surgery is performed in a hospital facility or day surgery.
An ICL procedure takes approximately 10 minutes per eye.
The surgery is performed under intravenous sedation or general anaesthetic.
Eyedrops are used to numb your eyes.
Absolutely no injection is performed in the orbit to numb the eye by Dr Lourens.
The procedure itself is performed through a 3 mm incision which is self-sealing, and no suturing is required.
The ICL is implanted inside of the eye and in certain cases rotated to a certain position if the patient has astigmatism.
As per standard both eyes are operated on the same day that we also accommodate patients who only wants 1 eye operated at a time.
The recovery following ICL surgery is usually 2 to 3 days.
