WHAT EXACTLY IS PRK LASER EYE SURGERY?

  • PRK or Photorefractive Keratectomy, is a two-step painless laser vision correction procedure utilising only one laser
  • PRK laser vision correction is completely painless as numbing drops are used to anaesthetise the eye’s surface. FIRSTLY, the surface layer cells are manually removed from the surface of the cornea using medical alcohol. The surface layer is reflected away exposing the inner layer of the cornea . SECONDLY, the cornea is then painlessly reshaped by an Excimer laser. At Crystal Eye and Laser Centre we have spared no expense by obtaining the World’s most advanced and accurate excimer laser, the Zeiss Mel 90 to deliver exceptionally accurate results reshaping the cornea during laser eye surgery.
  • As no flap has been created the bare area on the cornea is covered by a contact lens. The contact lens stay in for approximately 5 days allowing the surface of the eye to painlessly heal.
  • Full visual recovery can be expected between 10 - 14 days.

THE PRK ADVANTAGE

  •  PRK is extremely accurate as we use the world’s most advanced and accurate laser to perform the procedure.
  • Visual recovery is relatively quick once the surface layer has fully healed. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a week or two.
  • The PRK procedure is completely painless
  • The PRK procedure is extremely comfortable as there is no suction on the eye
  • No flap is created on the surface of the eye allowing a more natural healing.
  • No incision is made at any stage of the PRK procedure- only remoulding of the cornea with the excimer laser
  • No blades are used and the whole procedure is performed using LASER technology.
  • Almost 100% of patients achieve better than 20/20 vision if the eye has no other abnormalities in PRK surgery.
  • PRK can treat can treat a variety of errors including; nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
  • PRK is suitable for patients with very thin corneas who would otherwise not be suitable candidates for LASIK or SMILE.
  • PRK can treat scars on the cornea which are contraindications in LASIK and SMILE laser eye surgery.

Common Questions

See some common questions and answers below. Can't find and answer to your question? Get in touch and we'll answer all your questions!

  • Is PRK Laser eye surger painful?

No,  the whole procedure is completely painless.  During the procedure you will feel some mild pressure on the eye only.  Once the procedure is complete you will have a scratchy or foreign body sensation for a few days after surgery while the bare area on your cornea heals.  Healing is expected after 3 to 5 days.

  • What happens when I move my eye?

As we have the most advanced and latest Femtosecond laser, the Zeiss Visumax 800, our laser has eye tracking technology that locks onto your eye prior to any laser being performed.  This ensures that even if you move your eye your laser procedure will be absolutely precise.

  • When can I drive again?

Almost all patients have legal driving vision without glasses the first week after the procedure.  Patients however are discouraged to drive to their day -1 post-operative appointment.  As a rule we usually advise patients that you can drive the next week after your procedure.

  • What are the limits of PRK?

PRK can safely treat nearsightedness up to -8 and farsightedness up to +3 diopters. Astigmatism can be treated up to +/- 6 diopters.  It is however crucial that you undergo a suitability test during your consultation where all the parameters of the eye will be measured; especially the corneal thickness which will be the main factor to determine whether you are suitable for PRK or other procedures or not.  If you are not suitable for PRK there are other options that will be discussed during your initial consultation.

  • Do I pay for any enhancement procedures?

No,  enhancement procedures are covered by Crystal Eye and Laser Centre up to the age of 45 years or until presbyopia or reading vision problems sets in.

  • Does Health Insurance cover PRK surgery?

Some health insurance companies do cover PRK surgery on their top tier plans.  You will have to be on the plan for at least 3 years to be eligible for PRK surgery.  We recommend that patients contact their insurance company to find out if they are covered.  Crystal Eye and Laser centre is registered with all health funds that provide PRK surgery cover.

  • Are there any risks to PRK surgery?

Yes, any form of laser eye surgery is still surgery and a medical procedure.  However, laser eye surgery is regarded as one of the safest operations in medicine. All possible complications will be discussed during the consultation process. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risk.  Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health professional.

  • How long does PRK surgery take?

PRK surgery takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes for both eyes to be complete.  The laser parts takes only a few seconds and most of the time in the laser suite is spent prepping the eye to undergo the laser portion of the procedure.

  • When will I be able to go back to work?

We usually suggest going back to work at least one to two weeks after your procedure.  We expect healing of the lasered area within 3-5 days and full visual recovery in 10-14 days. We would like to see you on the first day after surgery to make sure all is ok. There is no need to take more than 2 weeks off work if you decide to undergo PRK.

  • How long does PRK laser eye surgery last?

The effect of PRK lasts forever but as the eye is a biological structure it can change over time.  The lens inside of the eye has an effect over the PRK once you are older than 45.  Most PRK patients will still retain their distance vision but focusing up close will become difficult.  Like most people reading glasses will be needed.  We can however perform PRESBYOND  if you need reading glasses.

  • Do I pay for follow-up consults?

No, the fees of the PRK procedure covers all follow-up appointments.

  • Does Medicare cover PRK surgery?

No, PRK laser eye surgery does not fall under the MBS and needs to be self funded.  Some health insurers however do cover SMILE on their top tier plans.

  • When can I wear make-up again?

We recommend not to wear any make-up for at least 2 weeks after your PRK procedure.
